The rollout of PebblePad has enabled a renewed focus on personal academic tutoring. The creation of a reflective space providing information and guidance, made the workbooks especially powerful for both staff and students.
DR CELIA GREENWAY
UNIVERSITY OF BIRMINGHAM
The University of Birmingham recognised that contextualised approaches to personal academic tutoring (PAT) could improve the way it was supporting and monitoring academic progress. This drive to improve the student experience and raise the bar in personal tutoring in higher education saw the University partner with PebblePad in 2018. Today, PebblePad supports more than 36,000 learners across both undergraduate and postgraduate study, with digital workbooks helping the University to scaffold the entire PAT process while still allowing for contextualisation specific to the student's area of study. This contextualisation offers significant additional value to the learner and enables the University to monitor student progress and report on engagement at scale. Through the COVID pandemic, PebblePad's flexibility has allowed students to record and reflect on their weekly seminar tutorials.

At Leeds we are making huge strides towards embedding consistent practice in Academic Personal Tutoring across the institution. PebblePad has provided us with the functionality to design core content, providing a standard of tutoring below which no student can fall.
DR RUTH PAYNE
UNIVERSITY OF LEEDS
In 2020, following an extensive review, the University of Leeds partnered with PebblePad to support 40,000 students through an Academic Personal Tutoring (APT) process. The PebblePad implementation built on the success of the University's long-running ‘Leeds for Life’ programme and acted as a catalyst for change with the introduction of an institution-wide portfolio-based APT experience. While the PebblePad APT workbook scaffolds the entire academic tutoring process, it also embeds support to help students successfully transition into university life, along with introductions to feedback and academic integrity. The University has also been able to respond to the pandemic by creating and sharing a PebblePad workbook to monitor student wellbeing and share information about support services. A future phase of the PebblePad implementation will look to connect personal academic goals with employability initiatives to create end-to-end learning journeys that extend from university induction to graduate employment, and beyond.

PebblePad has been a really useful launchpad for discussions about personal tuition across the University. For students to create a reflective portfolio over the course of their degree and then to take it with them is a real advantage.
