About the webinar

This workshop will explore a) how ethical considerations can guide practices, irrespective of formal approval and b) the scope and possibilities that formal ethical approval by a governing Committee can offer. Participants will be encouraged to share experiences of practice and approval from their own institutional settings. This workshop will also discuss a range specific ethical considerations: participant consent (inc GDPR), anonymity/confidentiality, mechanisms for participant/data withdrawal and data storage. By the end of the workshop, participants will have a checklist of ethical questions to ask during and beyond their research design.

Title: Writing for publication

About the webinar

Many in academia are keen to write for publication but making it happen is difficult for diverse reasons including not being able to get down to the task, not being clear about where to publish and not understanding the rules of the game. This workshop for novices in writing about learning and teaching in higher education spread over three days will give you a chance to set up your own mini-writing retreat at home, with sessions guided by Sally each morning from 10-12 by Zoom. While Sally won’t be able to critique individual participant’ work, this will be an opportunity to take advantage of the expertise on hand to make this a really productive time for your publications.

The sessions will be interactive and flexibly organised but are likely to include:
Session 1 Wednesday 8th July: Getting started

  • Thinking through your reasons for wanting to get published;
  • Considering different outlets for publication (books, journals, blogs and so on) and fitting your writing plans to your specific rationale;
  • Getting motivated to start to write.

Session 2 Thursday 9th July 10-12: All about journals

  • Thinking through what journal editors are likely to be looking for;
  • Drafting the diverse sections of the article;
  • Maximizing your chances of getting accepted.

Session 3 Friday 10th July: Planning for success

  • Dealing with setbacks;
  • Putting together your personal action plan
  • Question and answer opportunity

By the end of the sessions you should be well placed for achieving your publication goals.

About Professor Sally Brown
Professor Sally Brown is an Independent Consultant in Learning, Teaching and Assessment and Emerita Professor at Leeds Beckett University where she was, until 2010, Pro-Vice-Chancellor. She is also Visiting Professor at Edge Hill University and formerly at the Universities of Plymouth, Robert Gordon, South Wales and Liverpool John Moores and at Australian universities James Cook Central Queensland and the Sunshine Coast. She publishes prolifically about teaching, learning and particularly assessment.
She holds Honorary Doctorates from the universities of Plymouth, Kingston, Bournemouth, Edinburgh Napier and Lincoln.
She is a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, a Staff and Educational Development Association (SEDA) Senior Fellow and a National Teaching Fellow

 

Follow on session 

There will be a follow on networking session led by Dr Duncan Cross and Sue Beckingham on 13th July 10am-12 noon for those who have attended either of the above workshops. This session will give you an opportunity to network with global PebblePad users to identify shared areas of research, and teaching and learning through the use of PebblePad. From this you will also be able to identify national and international collaboration opportunities for research and sharing practice. You will learn tips on how technology can be used to aid remote collaboration and network.  

Later in AugustPebblePad’s own Dr Jenny Masters will be running a workshop on reporting and publishing. This workshop will help you to frame your PebblePad implementation as applied educational research that will be suitable for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.
