Supporting employability initiatives

PebblePad supports the university-wide employability achievement record called the Griffith Graduate of Influence (GGoI), which allows students to record personal achievements in a variety of ways and for the records to be evaluated at a discipline or school-level. The initiative makes use of a range of PebblePad tools including an Activity Log to track the accumulation of activity points, a Career Portfolio template, a set of reflective templates to document co-curricular and extra-curricular activities, options to upload supporting evidence, and the submission and reporting capability of PebblePad’s assessment space, ATLAS. A digital PebblePad workbook provides the scaffolding for the GGol Portfolio.

Supporting mentoring programs

The Mentoring and Orientation Hub (MOH) at Griffith University run a wide range of peer support programs aimed at improving students’ feelings of belonging, social connections, academic achievement, and likelihood of retention. The MOH team employ PebblePad to recruit, train, and support peer mentors from a variety of disciplines operating in a range of different mentoring programs. A PebblePad workbook provides a ‘one-stop shop’ for the Volunteer Mentors, providing them with the information, essential materials and schedule they need for engaging with the mentees, as well as providing space for recording engagement data, noting any concerns or problems they wish to speak to a Senior Mentor about, and reflecting on their mentoring experience and skills developed. PebblePad is also used to evaluate key data from these programs, such as mentor feedback and student attendance figures.

With a class size approaching 400, consisting of a diverse range of students with a large variation in ability and education background - how do you turn around fail rates of 37-38%? The Griffith team turned to PebblePad, using it to support a re-development of the course to incorporate effective study strategies, reflection and self-evaluation and ongoing feedback. The PebblePad approach not only improved outcomes and reduced fail rates, it also provided additional insight into student wellbeing and support needs.
