About Griffith University

Griffith University is located across 6 campuses in South East Queensland, Australia, and is ranked in the top 2% of universities worldwide. With 50,000 students and an alumni network of over 200,000 graduates, Griffith’s reach and influence on the learners and leaders of the future is considerable. Griffith “believe in, strive for and celebrate the Remarkable” – and we can certainly attest that their PebblePad implementation has been quite remarkable indeedreaching an uptake of 30,000 licenses in their first 3 years of adoption and with continued sustained usage across the entire institution ever since.

Griffith adopted PebblePad with the vision of providing a degree-wide learning environment, enabling our 50,000 students to connect their learning experiences across their entire degree from day one through graduation. The use of PebblePad has from the very beginning been closely aligned with the university's employability initiatives.

Supporting employability initiatives

PebblePad supports the university-wide employability achievement record called the Griffith Graduate of Influence (GGoI), which allows students to record personal achievements in a variety of ways and for the records to be evaluated at a discipline or school-level. The initiative makes use of a range of PebblePad tools including an Activity Log to track the accumulation of activity points, a Career Portfolio template, a set of reflective templates to document co-curricular and extra-curricular activities, options to upload supporting evidence, and the submission and reporting capability of PebblePad’s assessment space, ATLAS. A digital PebblePad workbook provides the scaffolding for the GGol Portfolio.

Supporting mentoring programs

The Mentoring and Orientation Hub (MOH) at Griffith University run a wide range of peer support programs aimed at improving students’ feelings of belonging, social connections, academic achievement, and likelihood of retention. The MOH team employ PebblePad to recruit, train, and support peer mentors from a variety of disciplines operating in a range of different mentoring programs. A PebblePad workbook provides a ‘one-stop shop’ for the Volunteer Mentors, providing them with the information, essential materials and schedule they need for engaging with the mentees, as well as providing space for recording engagement data, noting any concerns or problems they wish to speak to a Senior Mentor about, and reflecting on their mentoring experience and skills developed. PebblePad is also used to evaluate key data from these programs, such as mentor feedback and student attendance figures.

Reducing fail rates

Griffith Case Study in Brief - Biochemistry

With a class size approaching 400, consisting of a diverse range of students with a large variation in ability and education background - how do you turn around fail rates of 37-38%? The Griffith team turned to PebblePad, using it to support a re-development of the course to incorporate effective study strategies, reflection and self-evaluation and ongoing feedback. The PebblePad approach not only improved outcomes and reduced fail rates, it also provided additional insight into student wellbeing and support needs.

Supporting authentic assessment

Griffith Case Study in Brief - Architecture

How do you support authentic assessment, while still ensuring that required performance criteria from National Standards are met and appropriately evidenced? The Griffith team used a PebblePad workbook to create a flow of work for students that follows as closely as possible that of the normal design process to make the learning as authentic as possible, while ensuring students are able to clearly understand what was being asked of them for each competency and criterion.
